The Folly of Racism: Challenging Discrimination and its Misinterpretations

Writer's picture: Luke GirkeLuke Girke

Racism, a belief system rooted in prejudice and discrimination based on one's race or ethnicity, stands on a fundamentally flawed foundation that holds individuals accountable for an immutable aspect of their identity—something they cannot change or choose. This profoundly ingrained bias has been perpetuated throughout history, often bolstered by misguided interpretations of sacred texts like the Bible. However, key historical figures, including Martin Luther King Jr. and John Newton, have disavowed racism, urging society to confront the foolishness and harm embedded within this prejudiced mindset.

Racism is a senseless ideology, as it judges individuals based on factors beyond their control—skin colour, ancestry, or ethnicity. This superficial evaluation dismisses the richness of human character, potential, and intrinsic worth within each person. The perpetuation of racism stems from a distorted perspective that fails to acknowledge the shared humanity we all possess, irrespective of our outward differences.

Historically, religion has played a complex role in shaping societal attitudes toward race. The misappropriation of religious texts, such as the Bible, has been used to justify racist beliefs and actions. However, a closer examination of the teachings within these scriptures often reveals messages of love, equality, and unity. In truth, religious teachings advocate for embracing and respecting all individuals, regardless of their background or ethnicity.

One pivotal figure who championed equality and justice was Martin Luther King Jr. His tireless efforts in the civil rights movement showcased the absurdity of racial prejudice. King's speeches and actions emphasised judging individuals based on their character and actions rather than their racial identity. He encouraged a society where people would be evaluated by the content of their character—a powerful rebuttal to the ignorance of racism.

Similarly, John Newton, a former slave trader turned abolitionist, experienced a transformation that led him to disavow the cruelty of the slave trade. His life story epitomises the potential for change and growth, challenging the notion that people are eternally bound to their prejudiced beliefs. Newton's evolution illustrates the fallacy of racism, revealing the capacity for individuals to alter their perspectives and recognise the error of their ways.

Racism is a foolish and baseless ideology that judges individuals based on factors they cannot change. Misappropriating religious texts and historical figures has perpetuated this damaging belief system. However, the teachings of equality, justice, and love prevail in various forms, encouraging us to challenge these erroneous ideas. Embracing the wisdom of influential figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and John Newton, we can strive for a world free of prejudice and discrimination. A world where we value each other based on our shared humanity, mutual respect, and the content of our character.
